For years, the well-connected world leader would use nothing but a BlackBerry to get their email on the move – and it is still Barack Obama's phone of choice. He uses a model specially enhanced by the US National Security Agency. But the news earlier this month that the White House Communications Agency is testing other phones, including models by Samsung and LG, sent shivers through fans of the struggling Canadian smartphone company, which has just announced an annual loss of $5.8bn.
For a world leader, security is much more than just having a passcode on your phone; it also means protecting it against attempted incursions from all the amateur and professional hackers, and more importantly spy agencies, who want to know to whom, when, what and where you have been speaking and reading. For a country's leader to have their phone eavesdropped is the ultimate failure of their national spy agency, and a huge loss of face. With enhancements,BlackBerry has been the spy agencies' phone of choice to guard against that so far. Now, though, Apple and Samsung – the two largest makers of smartphones – are starting to knock on the security services' doors.
- Talking about security.
For the most powerful man in the world, security needs to be more than just having a pattern, a passcode or your fingerprint. The President of the US isn't like us, he doesn't have nagging girlfriends or overprotective boyfriends like us. It's more about amateur and professional hackers, or worse still, spy agencies who constantly want to be aware of what he's doing, who he's talking to and what he's reading.
Nope, it's not a Blackberry 10
Even though all of us are completely done with the BB, Obama is known to be an affirmed Blackberry user for at least the last ten years. But soon after taking over as the most important person in the US, he had to give it up for sometime for a secure Sectera Edge phone specially created by the National Security Agency (NSA). This, however, was quickly replaced by a customized BlackBerry with a special security software called SecureVoice, developed in partnership with the NSA
- No WhatsApp, not even a selfie camera.
His customized Blackberry was stripped of every built-in feature that a hacker might be able to access. In fact, it doesn't have any games, no selfie-camera and, forget WhatsApp, no texting feature either. However, it does have world-class encryption features.
- No space for his bros or ex-girlfriends on the phone.
There's absolutely no way for this guy to fool around, not possible at all. The Blackberry is limited to calling only about 10 numbers, since they belong to those whose phones use the same kind of encryption. They include vice-president Joe Biden, Obama's chief of staff and some of his top advisers, his press secretary, first lady Michelle Obama (ha! What did you think?) and a few other family members.
- It has to be carried around with a secure base station.
It is possible that there are these base stations inside his presidential limousine and also in Air Force One. The secure base station is probably connected to a secure satellite link with Washington. Fancy!
All in all, while it might really awesome and secure, there's not much in it for a fun loving person like you and me. Go on Mr. President, you can have it.
