TV station replaces all filming gear with iPhones

iPhones may not be very good at photographing lunar eclipses, but apparently they’re just fine for television news broadcasts. A local TV news station in Switzerland has ditched standard TV cameras to go 100% iPhone.

The days of manhandling camera gear, pesky light stands, and tripods are at an end. Apple has looked into the future and has found the next big break in journalism — recording your live shots and standups on the iPhone. If it’s good enough for CNN, then it’s good enough for Swiss news program Léman Bleu, who recently gave their entire reporting team kits containing a microphone, an iPhone 6, and a selfie stick so they could do their day to day news reporting.
It’s a move that is certain to anger long time field photographers and other station employees. The traditional news industry has been grappling with how to stay relevant in the face of new media for years. Social media and blogs (even this one) are able to report on events and breaking news within seconds of it happening, and with people having the ability to choose which news to consume, it has become a struggle for more traditional outlets to retain viewer ship. When that audience goes away, so does the money. Which causes stations to do ridiculous things like trade in their professional gear for an iPhone.
